My Journey to Making Money Online

I am Hasan. A 35 year old engineer with over 10 years of experience in heavy industry. I can say I am pretty good at my job and having a very good career. So why am I bothering with creating this personal blog and trying to make money online and alternative ways of creating passive income methods?

My work is 1 hour and 30 minutes of ride from my house. I spend 3 hours on the road every day. I work 08:00 to 18:00 which means 10 hours every day. I arrive home at 19:30 every evening and I only have 11 hours for myself and for my family. Excluding the human needs, I am left with about 3 hours. I can only spend these few hours of time with my family. And I am mostly very tired or even exhausted after a day of work including 3 hours ride. Idea of making money online come out when I was trying to find a way to break this sick cycle,

All these years of using internet, I have come across tons of blogs or websites created by entrepreneurs (mostly by young ones) claim how they make tens of thousands of dollars online. The money they claim that they make is ten or even twenty times more than I do. Oh my god, what is this? If that is real, then one can make as much money as he will do in all his life in just a few months.

I believe many of them are exaggerating their success (or maybe the failure) to get attracted or to drive traffic to their website. But some guys really seem to be honest and very good at this making money online thing. Checking their Alexa rankings, google search rankings (SEO success), ads they show in their site and income proofs they share I am convinced that it is possible to make thousands of dollars by blogging. Is it worth to try? I think it is. Rather that dreaming of how it would be working from home and making thousands of dollars online, I decided to try the same. What will I lose if I fail? Some money that I will spend for hosting and etc. and the time I will spend for creating the blog/website. But it will still be an experience earned. But if I success, it will be dreams coming true. By the way when I say success, I am not talking about $25.000/month. For now, let’s keep it low as $1.000/month and see if I can get there.

So, this is how I started this blog. And this is my very first post “my journey to making money online” which I plan to update time to time to share my status with the visitors and followers. I will share each step I take and the details of my experiences here. It will be a very long post I believe. People have interest in making money online and searching tips on passive incomes may want to check this post time to time.

The first thing to do was to purchase the domain name and hosting. I believe the domain name is important. It is your title or the blog name in the end. After a whole day of thinking and writing down the possible options, I decided get

Second thing I did was to install and setup a WordPress theme. Although I have some experience on web design and programming, I prefer to proceed with WordPress. My intention is not to extend my web development skills but to create a successful content that will generate online passive income.

I completed purchasing the domain name and the hosting services, choosing and setting up the WordPress theme yesterday. All process took more than 2 hours.

Adding Some Plugins

In the last few days, I worked on the plugins that I needed in my wordpress blog. It took a considerable amount of time to search and choose a good plugin. There are tons of plugin options for each functionality. I had to read descriptions and comments. Some of them I installed, tried and uninstalled because they didn’t work as I expected.

Here is a list of plugins I have installed and partially configured:

  • MailChimp for WordPress: I plan to keep the subscribers updated about the new posts and opportunities. I haven’t enabled this one yet.
  • Slimstat Analytics: This one enables me to track site visitor details. It provides very good details.
  • Social Share WordPress Plugin: This one enables the visitors to share my blog pages and posts in their social media accounts.
  • Yoast SEO: I will need to optimize my blog for search engines robots. Just installed the plugin but I still need to learn how to use it.

Email account and Social Media

I created an email address with my blog domain name extension hasan[at] and contact[at] I created social media accounts in Instagram, twitter and pinterest. And I created a facebook page. I will use the social media to drive traffic to the blog. I added social media links with icons to the left most side of the main menu. So the users can visit the social accounts of the blog.

Logos, banners and image manipulation

I created logos and banner images and uploaded them to my social media accounts. That was really time consuming. I needed a free tool to edit and design images. After some search and comparison, I decided to use GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program). And it took a while to understand the functions and to create the images that I needed.

There are really a lot to do to get the blog to a good shape. I need to read a lot. Most of the things I learn and apply. Yet I am working on the design. I didn’t even start working on the content and SEO. I work until 2 – 3 am every night to proceed. And I have to wake up at 6 am in the morning and catch my bus at 6.40. I feel like a zombie in daytime.
